“Physical
fitness can neither be achieved by wishful thinking
nor outright purchase.”
-Joseph Pilates
Pilates was created by Joseph H.
Pilates over ninety years ago as a way to create
a healthy body, a healthy mind and a healthy life.
It is a unique system of stretching and strengthening
exercises that strengthens and tones muscles,
improves posture, provides flexibility and balance,
as well as, unites body and mind.
People are beginning to notice,
perhaps because of a new consciousness or dissatisfaction
with the results, how ineffective the old no-pain-no-gain
mentality and trendy exercise programs that seem
to be, literally popping up everyday truly are,
and are beginning to move towards a more mind-body
focus.
One of the reasons traditional exercise
programs may be failing us is that they tend to
isolate muscles and work each area of the body
individually rather than treating the body as
the uniquely designed whole that it is. Pilates
focuses on training the mind and body to work
together to achieve overall fitness.
While exercise should be an important
part of our lives, it should add to, not take
away from our enjoyment of life. With Pilates
mat work; we can minimize the amount of time and
money spent either in the gym or on costly memberships
and equipment. The Pilates mat work teaches us
that the body is the finest and only tool necessary
for achieving physical fitness.
Joseph Pilates called his approach
of using the mind to master the muscles “The
Art of Contrology.” In his words, “Ideally,
our muscles should obey our will. Reasonably,
our will should not be dominated by the reflex
actions of our muscles.”
